Taylor Strings sort-off

Huge thanks goes out to Gary Johnston, who has been sorting the strings that come from Taylor Guitars. (Thank you Taylor!) The strings from Taylor's repair dept come in a tangled mess, and Gary separates them into sets!

UK Second Strings Project?

Kevin wrote the following to a chap who expressed interest in creating a UK version of SSP, and wanted some ideas on how to distribution of the strings works.

Hello Shubs,

Speaking for myself, as far as the distribution goes it’s pretty loose. Sometimes I manage to make arrangements in advance through a music school or a music instructor, but typically I will seek out musicians once I land. In Sao Paulo I went to a jazz club and talked to the musicians during the break and made a very nice connection. Other times I have struck up a conversation with street musicians. In Cuba I work with the guitar department at the University of Havana – just walked in the door! In Indonesia I found a band playing at a small hotel in Bali and in East Timor (at the time part of Indonesia) I hooked up with an Australian ex-pat who said he could ‘put them to good use’, but it wasn’t clear to me that they would be used for music! (it was only a few sets as my weight limit was only 20 Kilos) If your friend is going to Jakarta, there should be no lack of opportunities.

Something more formal would probably be better, but as long as I trust the people I’m dealing with, I’m pretty much OK with it.

Tell your friend to have fun with it and to use the usual precautions. On balance the main reaction I get is confusion. Even when I explain the program they still seem befuddled. That’s part of the joy!

Yes, we are still accepting strings

I have gotten several emails lately asking if the Second Strings Project is still in operation. Yes, it is.

This from Kevin in December '08:

Next sets are going out in February to Cambodia. Last ones went to Honduras
in November .

And this from him more recently after I had told someone they could put full sets of strings in large envelopes with our poster on one side and the address on the other in green rooms at events:

A better (and greener) way to go is that as they are putting the new strings on they can put the old ones in the sleeves/’envelopes’ that the new ones came in and when all six are replaced, put the envelopes in the box the new stings came and then bundle those up (a box is a good container) and send them on.
